The 1968 442 was a car built to run with the big dogs of its day and, not only compete, but leave them in the dust. The w-30 cars were running nearly two seconds faster and putting out a whopping 360 horsepower stock! This cutlass though, would be able to put a beat down on its stock predecessor. The 455 cubic inch big block olds engine has been completely refreshed with plenty of performance parts added and has just over 1,000 miles on it since the rebuild. Letting all of that power breathe is a full 3ã¢?â stainless steel magnaflow exhaust system that was custom fitted and welded. The engine is hooked up to 400 short-tail that was completely rebuilt with a 2800 stall converter in it. The 4-4-2 name derives from the original set up of the first car that debuted in 1964. The set up was just that a 4 barrel carb, 4 speed transmission and dual exhaust. Many people, even to this day, think that 442 is the cubic displacement of the motor but in all reality oldsmobile never made a 442 cid motor. They did however make a 400 cubic inch big block and in 1965 it was the motor of choice for the cutlass 442 cars. Sales would steadily rise through the first generations 4 year span topping out at a tad over 25000 units. The 1968 model year would see the 4-4-2 become its own model and not just an option any longer.
