Cadillac made an 'open' vehicle either without or top or convertible top ever since the company was formed in 1902 but sadly the convertible was discontinued from the american auto market in 1976 and some thought that owning a new cadillac convertible would never be a possibility. By the early 1980's some noteworthy conversion companies such as american sunroof company, custom coach and hess and eisenhardt began converting the eldorado into a convertible. This classy example was done by hess and eisenhardt which produced armored cars and limousines to royalty, dignitaries and celebrities such as mamie eisenhower, john f. Kennedy and elvis presley. In addition to years of tlc this car has had the engine and transmission recently rebuilt and this car runs and shifts like a new car and is very smooth and comfortable to drive. The air-conditioning is nice and cold, those flimsy bumper fillers were replaced with high quality reproductions and the convertible top mechanism was replaced with genuine hess and eisenhardt parts. The glove-soft leather interior is original and looks amazing in contrast to the dark exterior. This car was the epitome of 1980's luxury and included such options as a digital odometer, digital fuel information center, digital climate control, twilight sentinel, am/fm cassette player with symphony sound, power windows, power locks, power driver and passenger seat with drivers memory control, power convertible top with rear defroster, remote trunk opener and power pull down, convertible boot and tonneau cover and true spoke wheels. This car was fully optioned and was one of the most expensive cars of the era. Under the hood is the original ht-4100 v8 that starts right up and runs very nice and smooth. Asc is a coachbuilding company. Coachbuilding companies often marketed to new car dealerships, but they usually did not work for, or in conjunction with the car manufacturer. There were exceptions, however and this car is one of those exceptions. American sunroof company (asc), a company which has converted over 1,000,000 cars, has had official relationships with many car companies. Asc's products are of such high quality that many manufacturers retain them to create convertibles. The volume of convertible sales is low enough that these manufacturers can't justify the cost of tooling up their own factories to make convertibles in-house like they used to. General motors sold cadillac el dorado convertibles from asc in the 1984 and 1985 model years, which were sold in cadillac dealerships. In this case, it was handled in two different ways. Some of them were sold as regular production "factory convertibles." gm handled the logistics of these "factory" conversions and sold the cars to dealers under the rpo system (regular production option). Even though the car was bought from cadillac directly as a convertible, it was in fact a converted car, and had a placard from the coachbuilder in the doorjamb. This el dorado has a continental kit installed on the trunk lid. Rolls royseã¢?â style grille that lets everyone know that a lot of luxury is heading their way. This car with 68000 original miles came with a standard ht4100 v8 and automatic transmission.
