It even had its own division, known as the continental division, however it was short lived and only lasted from 1956 to 1957. For the next sixteen years the continental was the sole sedan produced by lincoln. The town coupe nameplate debuted in 1973, this gave the coupes a similar high end name that the sedans had with the town car nameplate. For 1978 the continental town coupe received and completely redesigned dash. In an effort to cut weight, the all steel dashboard frame was replace with an all plastic dashboard frame, a design borrowed from the mercury division.
